What’s the story about?

Meet Lottie Brooks, a girl trying to survive school, friendships, embarrassing moments and all the drama that comes with growing up! Her life isn’t always glamorous, and things don’t always go to plan, but that’s what makes her so funny and relatable.

What do we think?

Honestly, I find Lottie Brooks really funny and entertaining! Lottie is the kind of girl who doesn’t really care about having the latest Chanel lip gloss or keeping up with every trendy thing. She just wants to get on with life, deal with her problems and be herself!

That’s one of the things I like about her. She’s not trying to be perfect, and her life isn’t all about looking cool or impressing everyone. Instead, she gets caught up in awkward situations and everyday drama that make you laugh because they feel so real.

The diary-style writing also makes the story feel personal, almost as if you’re reading Lottie’s private thoughts. It’s easy to get caught up in her world and wonder what embarrassing thing is going to happen next!

Who would enjoy this book?

If you enjoy funny stories about school, friendship and the chaos of growing up, this could be a great book for you. It’s especially good for readers who like characters who are relatable, imperfect and just trying to figure life out.

The Scout Verdict 🔎

Lottie Brooks is funny, entertaining and refreshingly relatable. She reminds us that you don’t need the latest trends or a perfect life to have a good story. Sometimes, just being yourself is entertaining enough! If you enjoy the first book than you ca just get on to reading the rest of the series.

A Guide for Parents

Is the Lottie Brooks series suitable for children?

Written and illustrated by Katie Kirby, the Lottie Brooks series follows Lottie as she navigates school, friendships, embarrassing moments and the challenges of growing up. Told through diary entries and humorous illustrations, the books offer a funny and relatable look at everyday life.

The series may appeal to readers around 9–13 years old, although suitability depends on each child’s maturity and reading preferences. This is a suggested age range rather than an official rating.

The stories explore friendship, popularity, crushes, appearance and the pressure to fit in. While the humour makes the books entertaining, parents may want to consider whether these themes are appropriate for their child.

We recommend starting with the first book to see whether your child enjoys the writing and feels comfortable with its content.

What can children learn from the series?

Although the books are mainly written to entertain, they can also provide opportunities for learning.

1. Understanding friendship and peer pressure

Lottie’s experiences can help children think about what makes a good friend and why they shouldn’t change themselves just to fit in.

2. Learning that popularity isn’t everything

The stories offer opportunities to discuss how popularity, trends and fashionable products don’t determine someone’s worth. Being kind and being yourself matter much more.

3. Building self-confidence

Lottie’s embarrassing moments remind readers that nobody is perfect and that making mistakes is a normal part of growing up.

4. Encouraging a reading habit

The diary-style writing, humour and illustrations can make the books appealing to children who enjoy funny, easy-to-follow stories.

How can parents get more out of the series?

Parents can use a few simple questions to start conversations without turning reading into homework.

  • Discuss popularity: Does being popular mean someone is a better friend?
  • Explore peer pressure: Should you follow every trend to fit in?
  • Talk about friendship: What makes someone a good friend?
  • Encourage confidence: What advice would you give Lottie when she feels embarrassed?

These questions can help children reflect on their own experiences while keeping reading fun.

Our final verdict

The Lottie Brooks series is a fun choice for children who enjoy humour, school stories and relatable characters. For parents, it offers opportunities to discuss friendship, self-confidence and the pressure to fit in.

Our recommendation: Consider this series if your child enjoys funny stories about growing up. It can remind young readers that they don’t need to be the most popular person or follow every trend to be happy being themselves.
